D.C. Bar Pro Bono Center Training: Child Support Basics for Volunteer Attorneys

This training session is designed to equip attorneys handling family law cases to navigate complex child support issues. Even if child support is not a concern for a client now, it may become important during their case. The ability to understand DC's child support laws and systems can be pivotal at trial, in mediation, or during settlement negotiations. The training will focus primarily on child support issues involving indigent or low income families. 
 
Training Topics include:
•How to Make a Request for Child Support
•The Role of the Child Support Agency (Office of the Attorney General/Child Support Services Division) in Your Client's Child Support Matter
•Discovery Options and Techniques
•The Child Support Guideline Calculator and How to Use it Effectively
•Child Support Payments and the Child Support Clearinghouse
•Wage Withholding, Contempt and Other Forms of Enforcement
 
This training is appropriate for attorneys and attorney/paralegal teams (paralegals must attend with an attorney).
 
Participants should have a basic knowledge of family law in the District of Columbia.
