Essential Trial Skills Series, Part 1: Pretrial Motions Through Opening

Description: 
Katie Bertram and Tom Murphy, two seasoned trial attorneys, will help you develop and refine your litigation strategies, starting with pretrial motions and going through the opening statement. Using a sample case pattern, you will learn about Rule 16, motions in limine, stipulations, exhibits, de bene esse depositions, party deposition designations, voir dire, client preparation, pretrial conferences, pretrial orders, and opening statements (with or without a jury). Not only will you learn about the law and procedure in D.C. local and federal courts, but you will have the opportunity to find out what strategies our faculty have found to be most effective. We are confident that those who attend will leave this class with new ideas and approaches, and with more confidence in how to handle their next trial. Future classes will cover direct and cross-examination, closings, and post-trial motions.

In this session, Katie and Tom will provide techniques and strategies for effective direct examination, maximizing your witness’s potential and minimizing his or her weaknesses. They will also teach those who attend how to use cross-examination to tell their story and provide strategies on controlling and impeaching witnesses. We are confident that you will leave this session with new ideas and approaches, and with more confidence in how to handle your next trial.

Join Katie Bertram and Tom Murphy, two seasoned trial attorneys, for the third session of the Essential Trial Skills Series. Those who attend will learn tips and strategies that will help them finish strong at their next trial. Our experienced and engaging faculty will provide tried and true tactics for closing arguments and post-trial motions, including: 

• Crafting of arguments 
• Use of evidence 
• Arguing evidence admitted for limited purpose 
• Corrective measures and scope of review 
• Timing of post-trial motions 
• Staying and securing judgments.
