D.C. Bar Litigation Skills Series: Making a Persuasive Opening Statement *In-Person at D.C. Bar Only*

August 1, 2019

Credits:  3.0 Credit Hours (3.5 Skills Credit Hours for New York)

Description: Our expert faculty will help those who attend this informative and interactive class enhance their trial skills in a constructive and positive learning environment.  During this class, which is part of the D.C. Bar’s 2019 Litigation Skills Series, attendees will focus on developing and making persuasive opening statements.

The program will begin with the presentation: Making a Persuasive Opening Statement.  Among the topics we will cover are capturing the jury’s attention at the outset, previewing the evidence that supports your unified case theory and/or undermines the other side’s theory, and convincing the jury to find in favor of your client.  During the workshop portion of this class, participants will perform by giving an “opening statement” employing the techniques covered during the presentation.  Our faculty will facilitate the workshop portion of this program by offering critiques focusing on the organization, clarity, and persuasiveness of each participant’s statement.  While we are using a civil case file, those who practice administrative or criminal law may also find this class of interest.

While this class will challenge participants to perform at their best, the program’s primary goal is to afford participants the opportunity to build upon the skills they have, and to finish the program with a better understanding of how to persuasively and professionally further their clients’ interests at trial.  We are limiting the class size to 16 participants.
