It Didn’t Happen at Work: Can They Fire Me Anyway?

Course book from CLE class presented on January 15, 2018.

Employees engage in all kinds of off-duty conduct that can cause employers to wonder, “Can we fire that employee for doing that?”. Employers must be mindful of the legality of imposing consequences upon employees for their conduct outside the workplace. This fast-paced class will address trending issues in this area, including terminations based on the employee’s:

  • social media posts;
  • marijuana use;
  • political activity;
  • outside employment;
  • romantic relationships/socializing with coworkers;
  • tobacco use;
  • support of LGBT rights, pro-choice or pro-life organizations, gun ownership, and other social causes and issues;
  • alcohol use;
  • arrests (pending disposition).

Faculty: Diane A. Seltzer Torre, The Seltzer Law Firm (Course Chair); Karen Doner, Doner Law, PLC; David Warner, Centre Law & Consulting
